TRIALS: The Alfred Hospital, VIC

At the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct at the Alfred Hospital, Victoria, a combination of UltraClean EPA/DHA Plus and CardioNutrients is providing benefits for surgical recovery in two trials led by Professor Franklin Rosenfeldt.

The first trial – the metabolic, physical and mental (MPM) orthopaedic trial – recruited patients aged 60 years and older who were undergoing total knee replacement surgery. Those who received the active treatment (a combination of BioCeuticals® UltraClean EPA/DHA Plus and CardioNutrients along with meditation and music therapy) were able to leave hospital sooner after surgery than those in the placebo group.

The second project is the Integrative Cardiac Wellness Program headed by Dr Lesley Braun together with Prof. Rosenfeldt. Over 300 patients have completed the program which has been running for more than a year. The program provides nutritional support, including BioCeuticals® UltraClean EPA/DHA Plus and CardioNutrients, to patients in the lead-up to heart surgery (e.g. coronary bypass, valve repair/replacement). In addition to BioCeuticals® nutritional support, bedside wellness educational visits are conducted where dietary and lifestyle modifications, stress management, and complementary therapies are discussed. The aim of the program is to ascertain whether nutritional supplementation and wellness educational visits could reduce troponin I release (an indicator of cardiac damage), atrial fibrillation and the length of hospital stay.

The results show patients generally leave hospital post-surgery 1.3 days earlier and with a surgery cost reduction of $3264 per patient, if supplemented with BioCeuticals® CardioNutrients and UltraClean EPA/DHA Plus pre-surgery.
