Summary
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects millions of people worldwide, with incidence rates in Western countries at approximately 24 cases per 100,000 people each year.1 For Dr Heather Armstrong, an associate professor of gastroenterology at the University of Alberta, this highlights the need to better understand the role of the gut microbiome.
While IBD pathogenesis is multifactorial, accumulating evidence suggests that the health of the digestive system and its microbial inhabitants are an important piece of the puzzle. Drawing on her own research, as well as that of her colleagues, Dr Armstrong explores how gut microbes, diet and the immune system intersect, and the implications for autoimmune conditions like IBD.
Importantly, she outlines the Precision Carbohydrate Diet, a highly personalised, investigational dietary intervention currently under study in clinical trials.
