Dr Cecilia Shing Presents on Gut Health and Endurance at the 2013 BioCeuticals Research Symposium.Disruption of gut integrity may lead to the leakage of gram negative bacteria (lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) from the gut into the circulation, a process known as endotoxaemia. LPS is an endotoxin that is harmless when contained within the gut, as the gut normally blocks movement of LPS into the circulation. However, strenuous exercise redirects blood flow away from the gut, increases oxidative stress and results in ischaemia/reperfusion of gastrointestinal tissues, which all act to increase gut permeability and the translocation of LPS across the intestinal wall. Animal models and human trials suggest that probiotics reduce inflammatory exacerbated intestinal permeability. Supplementation with probiotics in athletes has the potential to contribute to improved immune surveillance and maintenance of gut integrity that may be compromised during periods of intense exercise, exercise in hot environments and fluid restriction during exercise. This plenary session webinar explores the importance of the gut and the potential for probiotics supplementation to enhance exercise performance. Watch Now »
Probiotics: Evidence based researchAssociate Professor Luis Vitetta examines the importance of the use of a high strength, multi-strain probiotic as therapy for gastrointestinal inflammation and disease. According to Luis, the complexity and sheer volume of the innate human bowel flora, make it impossible to treat these conditions successfully with a lower strength or a single strain probiotic. When people embark on a weight loss program, they’re often told to simply take in less calories and exercise more. Certainly, this is a major part of the solution but as primary healthcare providers we need to also think about how we can help our patients achieve their goals and how to maintain them on their journey to a healthier life.
Australian and Japanese scientists have uncovered the mechanism by which probiotic bacteria protect the gut from E. coliinfection. Over the last few years, scientists have found that lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria have health-promoting effects, but until now exactly how they did this wasn't fully understood. The human gut is home to a wide variety of microbes that have beneficial effects, including aiding gut function and protecting against illness and infection. One of these, a probiotic known as Bifidobacterium, modulates host defence responses and protection against infectious diseases.
Keen to join the 'culture club'? Read these tips first, says Bonnie Cleaver. Here's a fact you'll want to read sitting down — your digestive tract is home to more than 100 trillion live bacteria, weighing up to 2kg — that's about 10 times the number of cells in your body. Getting enough "good" bacteria, called probiotics, supports digestive health, but that's not the only reason you should consider taking them. Probiotics also bolster immunity, with around 70 percent of immune cells located in the gut. While it's still early days for research, science is also linking probiotics to exciting benefits like relief from lactose intolerance, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, UTIs and thrush. But with the explosion of probiotic foods and supplements on the market, it's tricky to pick the best one for you. Read on for expert advice on how to make the most of the good bugs.
