The D-Lightful Vitamin D
This talk highlights why vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency has been related to increased risk for rickets in children and osteoporosis and the painful bone disease osteomalacia in adults. Besides the skeletal health benefits of vitamin D, it is now recognised that vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a wide variety of clinical disorders including preeclampsia, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, neurocognitive dysfunction and infectious diseases.
To treat and prevent vitamin D deficiency the Endocrine Society recommends children ages 0-1 and 1-18 require 400-600 IUs and 600-1000 IUs vitamin D daily respectively and adults require 1500-2000 IUs daily. Those who are obese (BMI >30) need 2-5 times more vitamin D. Vitamin D toxicity is not observed until serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels >150 ng/ml. Sensible sun exposure, dietary intake of vitamin D and vitamin D supplements is a three-part strategy to maintain a satisfactory vitamin D status to maximise health.
