Corn silk, also known as ‘yu mi xu’, which translates to ‘jade rice whiskers,’ is an annual plant that can grow up to three metres high.[1,2] The flowers are unisexual and it is the yellow, red or brown thread-like stigma and styles (also known as the silk) from the female flowers that are used.[3-5] The name ‘Zea mays’ is derived from ancient Greek and Taino languages and literally means ‘sustaining life’ and ‘life giver’, respectively. Corn silk was introduced to Mexico and Central America over 9,000 years ago and it is now cultivated worldwide.[2,4]
With a long history of use in traditional Chinese (TCM), Iranian, Ayurvedic and western herbal medicinal paradigms, corn silk has a mild sweet taste and is considered to have sweet and neutral properties.[1,2,5,7-9] The initial documentation of its use in TCM was in the historical text, Sichuan Journal of Chinese Herbal, and the herb was also noted to be used by the Inca people.[1,8]
Entering via the bladder, gallbladder and kidney meridians, the nourishing, stimulating and softening qualities of corn silk lends to its history of use in the various paradigms.[3,5,7,8]
