Background:
Calendula, also known as marigold, is an aromatic perennial native to Europe and the Mediterranean region. It is a common garden herb with a mild odour and bitter taste that has been in use since the 12th century, including as the poor man’s alternative to saffron.[1-5]

The name calendula is derived from the Latin word ‘calends’, meaning the first day of the month in the ancient Roman calendar, due to its extended flowering period, while ‘marigold’ is a reference to the virgin Mary.[2,5,6]

Various types of oral, buccal and topical preparations of the flower petals have a long history of use in folk medicine.[1]
