Brain scans could pinpoint depression

High-tech brain scans may indicate depression and how to treat the disorder, according to an internationally renowned integrative medicine doctor.

Dr David Haase, who specialises in functional neurology, says psychiatry rarely looks at the brain of patients to see if everything is firing right.

Dr Haase recommends neurofeedback and brain scans, called Quantitative EEG diagnostic scan, to measure the brain against a database of healthy brains.

“Psychiatry is the only specialty that does not examine the organ they treat – but that is no longer applicable. Neurofeedback is now widely available even in Australia,” Dr Haase said.

“Certain brainwaves seem to indicate depressive mood disorders. Brainwave patterns are more reproducible and predictable and help practitioners to improve the condition faster and measure the improvement.”

Depression is now being recognised as a disease of inflammation, we need to rethink how we approach this and how we treat it,” states Haase.

Through his practices, Dr Haase has seen significant results through investigation and diagnosis of gastrointestinal function and lifestyle interventions.

“The approach is to do what is wise and what works” says Haase.
