The Genetics of Detoxification

In today’s world, it’s impossible to escape the impact of environmental toxins. They are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, in our homes and our workplaces. While our bodies are normally very efficient at dealing with a considerable toxic load, we do have our limits. When these limits are reached, not only is our ability to detoxify environmental toxins compromised but our capacity to properly process endogenous compounds and metabolites is also affected.

It’s important to recognise that the ability to detoxify varies from person to person, depending on the genes they inherit. We know that certain gene variants, often referred to as SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), can affect detoxification enzymes and pathways, compromising our ability to effectively process and remove a wide range of compounds.

This seminar explores the key genes associated with detoxification, including phase 1 (CYP 450 enzymes) and phase 2 pathways, as well as genes responsible for endogenous antioxidant systems.

Dr Denise Furness explains how specific gene variants (SNPs) can dramatically affect our capacity for normal detoxification. She demonstrates how testing for specific SNPs can arm healthcare practitioners with the critical information required to create targeted therapies aimed at restoring, managing and augmenting the body’s natural detoxification systems.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how gene variants influence normal detoxification systems.
  • Identify genetic predispositions that affect endogenous antioxidant systems required to safeguard against oxidative stress, associated with normal detoxification.
  • Learn how to restore and manage detoxification through personalised assessments and treatments.
  • Gain a deep appreciation of the relationship between genes, diet and environment and how this could impact detoxification function and capacity.
  • Learn how to use the Clinical Services Detoxification Profile for more targeted and personalised treatment strategies designed to improve detoxification and overall health.
