With the increase in cardiovascular disease, along with an ageing population, comes an increase in patients requiring cardiac surgeries such as coronary artery bypass graft.

Along with cardiac surgery comes the potential for post-surgery complications as well as long rehabilitation periods for patients. Often these complications can be increased in the elderly, particularly those with co-morbidities.

The cardiac research unit at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, seeing increased numbers of patients coming in for cardiac surgery, facilitated a study to ascertain the effect of nutraceuticals on biochemical, clinical and economic outcomes on cardiac patients. The study headed by Dr Jee-Yoong Leong proposed that the use of nutraceuticals would have a favorable influence on oxidative stress in these patients and hence improve clinical outcomes.1

BioCeuticals’ nutraceuticals used in the study:

  • Coenzyme Q10 100mg TDS
  • Magnesium orotate 400mg TDS
  • Lipoic acid 100mg TDS
  • Omega-3 EPA fatty acids 300mg TDS
  • Selenium 200mcg per day

Investigators of the study recruited patients between the years of 2004 and 2006. Patients were scheduled to undergo elective coronary artery bypass graft and/or valve surgery. Patients took the nutraceuticals for two months whilst waiting for surgery and for one month post surgery. The results of study showed that the patients who received the nutraceuticals had improved redox status, reduced myocardial damage and a shortened length of hospital stay.1

As a result of this positive study, the Integrative Cardiac Wellness Program (ICWP) was initiated at The Alfred for all cardiac surgery patients. Patients receive the above nutraceutical combination from the time of enrollment into surgery until four weeks after surgery.2

Recently, a second study group from the Cardiac Research Unit at The Alfred Hospital investigated the efficacy of the ICWP on clinical outcomes in surgical patients. The study highlighted that the patients enrolled in the ICWP program had improved post operative heart function as well as high re-attendance rates in the rehabilitation program.2
